Cosmic Surgery Pop-up Book

After releasing and selling out of the first run of Cosmic Surgery books, I thought I should see if I can drum up some press and interest to see if making a second larger edition would be a good idea. So far so good. With interest from a few publishers and also the possibility of self-publishing, it may well happen. I have set up a pre-order email list, so anyone interested in the possibility of getting hold of a copy, please go a head and sign up.

Here are some press features the book and my project have been getting:

Cosmic Surgery Book

Yesterday I went and visited Emily at Stanley James Press, who has been making my Cosmic Surgery pop-up book. We have made a very small number of books to start drumming some interest in the project, and will be sending a few to some photography dummy book awards around Europe. There will also be an edition of 10 books signed and numbered which we will sell to help fund the next edition of books.

We have sent the first two books off to France for LUMA Dummy Book Award Arles 2015 and are happy to announce that it has been shortlisted!

Slide show on the wall of the South Bank Centre for WOW!

I was asked to contribute to a project 'Acts of Looking' which would be showing pictures from female photographers for Women of the World Day. The pictures would be projected on the South Bank Centre for the weekend. Two of my Cosmic Surgery images were amongst these images shown. You can see the projection and read more about the project here

Dear Sylvia Review and Photos

Sad I wasn't able to make it over for the 'Dear Sylvia' Exhibition in Australia, which looks brilliant and has been getting a great response. Heres one Review on Art Guide

...'Michelle Sank takes portraits of young women who have undergone cosmetic surgery, but Alma Haser’s portraits from her series Cosmic Surgery, 2012, are the highlight of Dear Sylvia. Haser folds photos of her models into geometric 3D forms, then places them on the original portrait and re-photographs them. The finished images draw attention to the artifice inherent in any portrait by presenting faces that are fragmented and distorted – multifaceted, as if seen through the eyes of an insect. Yet they remain, undeniably, a kind of true likeness.'

If your in Paddington, Australia you can still see the show until 22nd March at the Australian Centre for Photography

Australian Centre for Photography - Dear Sylvia

I will be showing my Cosmic Surgery project at the Australian Centre for Photography from the 31st January - 22nd March.

This exhibition is an elusive response to the deepest concerns intensely depicted by Sylvia Plath. The female photomedia artists in Dear Sylvia explore some of the many ways of representing the female body, whether they show their own body, recreate those of others or document the political or social realities of bodies that suffer and fight.

Also featuring, Dina Litovsky, Polly Penrose, Dana Popa, Julie Rrap, Michelle Sank, Flore-Aël Surun, Jessica Tremp and Marlous van der Sloot. Curated by ACP Curator Claire Monneraye.
